EVALUATION OF SPATE FOR USE ON CONCRETE. PHASE 1

This report describes the results of work carried out at the Sira Ltd for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory under contract no. Con/9355/24. The objective of this programme was to determine whether the stress measurement technique SPATE could be used for measuring stresses in concrete. In addition, samples of mortar and aggregate, and the effect of surface coatings would be studied. The prototype spate equipment was used in conjunction with an Instron 10-ton loading machine, model no. 1342. Several cubes of concrete and mortar, some having holes through their centres, and a sample of Laleham aggregate were tested. Two types of epoxy cement coatings were tested for their signal enhancement and smoothing effect, and experiments on filling one of the epoxy cements with aluminium powder and slate powder were tried. Tensile loading of the concrete cube was also briefly investigated. A cube of aluminium and several dogbone samples were tested, with and without epoxy cement coatings, for comparison purposes.
