MEASURES TO IMPROVE THE FLOW OF GROUND-LEVEL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN CITIES
DIRECTIVES SUR L'AMELIORATION DE LA CIRCULATION DES TRANSPORTS COLLECTIFS DE SURFACE DANS LES VILLES
Suggestions are given for the technical services of Urban Traffic Authorities of congested French cities. Practical ideas or low-cost fragmentary measures currently enforced in various urban areas are collected. The goal is to promote policies favoring mass transportation, leading to better use of existing facilities and urban networks. They include: Impact of parking policies on mass surface transit; Traffic improvements on streets used by bus lines; Lanes exclusively devoted to bus lines; Streets exclusively devoted to bus lines; Special bus traffic lights; Implantation and arrangement of bus stops. Evaluation criteria, police personnel requirements and the Marseille experiment are mentioned in annex.
