TRUCK WEIGHTS AS RELATED TO PAVEMENT DESIGN IN ALABAMA
The number of trucks, truck axle weights and lane usage were measured at ten weigh-in-motion sites in Alabama. From this data, the truck distribution factor defined as the average number of equivalent 18k axle loads per truck was determined for purposes of both rigid and flexible pavement design for each site and for all sites combined. The total traffic count and percent trucks was determined. The percent trucks using the outside lane was computed for each four lane site. The results indicate that the truck distribution factors previously used for pavement design in Alabama were too low. Updated factors were adopted for use. The results also indicates that the lane distribution factor for the design lane of a four lane facility should be at least 85 percent. (Author)
