TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN KINDERGARTEN SCHOOLS; TEACHERS' ATTITUDES, BELIEFS
In previous studies the possibilities of traffic education for preschool children have been investigated. Experiments demonstrated that parents are capable of carrying out the developed preschool education in traffic programme, if they are provided with the necessary information and supported by activities in the kindergarten schools. In this study a questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 142 kindergarten schools. The design of the questionnaire was in accord with the Fishbein and Azjen attitude-behaviour model. Attitudes and subjective norms were measured directly and indirectly, in addition the intention to carry out traffic education in the class and a number of external variables were measured. The teachers appeared to be slightly in favor of traffic education, but the results also suggest that they generally overestimate the possible results of traffic education activities in school. The results indicate that teachers lack the necessary information about the problems of children in traffic, and that the Dutch traffic safety organization would be suitable to present this information. Since the teachers are in favor of cooperation with the parents with regard to traffic education, and the parents regard the teachers' involvement as an important factor in their willingness to carry out the preschool education in traffic programme, it is concluded that in the implementation of the programme an approach of the parents through the teachers, provided that these receive the necessary information, is quite feasible.
