MODELLING URBAN FUEL CONSUMPTION
This paper deals with the fuel consumed by cars for each element of an urban trip by drawing on the results of a survey conducted in Leeds with two instrumented vehicles. Those characteristics of urban car trips which are most likely to influence fuel consumption are identified and the data obtained from the survey is used to quantify the importance of each element of an urban trip. The fuel consumed during a stop/ start manoeuvre is analysed, and this is followed by a comparison of the fuel consumption rate estimated when the Leeds results are applied to the standard European driving cycle and the corresponding manufacturer's published data. Finally, the results obtained are used to calibrate two fuel consumption expressions to be used with the output of traffic simulation and assignment models. (Author/TRRL)
