TRANSPORT AND THE ELDERLY: PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE ACTION

This book reviews the barriers to mobility which elderly people encounter every day and discusses the practical ways in which these barriers can be broken down. It first examines walking, the traffic hazards in the road system, increased distance from essential facilities, and the difficult access to public buildings and public transport. The cost of motoring, the holding of driving licences, difficulties of getting in and out of cars, and parking problems are discussed together with the difficulties encountered when travelling by bus. Attention is drawn to the chaotic system of travel concessions, access to medical treatment and day care facilities. One chapter is devoted to the use of voluntary transport resources, use of private cars and voluntary minibus services, and voluntary transport co-ordination. Suggested action is summarised in appendices regarding the organisation, control and problems of the bus industry, unconventional public bus services, and minibuses and the law. (TRRL)
