TRAFFIC ACCIDENT OR SUICIDE?
There has been considerable speculation regarding the extent to which traffic accidents are, in fact, suicides. Some have argued that the incidence of traffic accident suicide may be particularly high among teenagers. However, research on the subject of suicide involving a motor vehicle has been limited. The purpose of this study was to gain some insights into the magnitude and characteristics of the problem. The study population involved all drivers and pedestrians who died in Ontario from January 1977 to December 1981. During that time, 36 driver and 34 pedestrian fatalities were classified as suicides by the Office of Chief Coroner.
