INFLUENCE OF COMPLEX GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS ON THE STRESS- STRAIN FIELD NEAR LARGE-SPAN BRIDGE FOUNDATIONS: STATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS

Complex geological and geotechnical conditions (faults and discontinuities) at the site for the large-span bridge (over the 100 M deep canyon near the town of Rijeka) have indicated the necessity for a detailed analysis of the stress-strain field near foundation blocks. Extension geological, geophysical and geotechnical investigation, together with microseismology studies have been conducted to obtain parameters for geotechnical analysis. Both 2D and 3D static and dynamic analysis have been performed using the displacement-based finite element method. The soil-structure model is composed from 3D linear soil/rock elements (constant strain) whereas the bridge structure is modelled using 3D beam elements. Dominant faults and discontinuities have been analysed for three extreme states-full bond, free sliding and completely independent movement of neighbouring sides. Dynamic sensitivity analyses indicated significant influence of boundary condition and discontinuity idealisations on fundamental frequency. Superposition of stresses due to selfweight and seismic forces showed predominant influence of discontinuities on the stress-strain field and indicated the need for prestressing anchors. Surveying observations are constantly performed to follow the rock mass improvement and to measure the displacements of control points.
