STANDARD LABORATORY TESTING FOR COMPACTED SHALES
Embankments constructed of weak and non-durable rock, like shale, require special design and construction technology. This fact has been underscored in the midwestern U.S. by the unsatisfactory performance of hundreds of large shale fills. Research has resulted in a recommended sequence of eight standard laboratory tests. Four tests are required for classification (Atterberg limits, point load strength, and slake durability or cyclic slaking). Tests to define compaction characteristics and design parameters include: moisture-density relations, compaction-degradation, one dimensional compression, and consolidated undrained triaxials on saturated samples. The latter two tests allow prediction of settlement and the assessment of stability of the slopes. The number of the covering abstract of the congress is TRIS no. 385148. (Author/TRRL)
