ATS-5 MULTIPATH/RANGING/DIGITAL DATA L-BAND EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM. PHASE IV, FLIGHT TEST PROCEDURES AND FLIGHT TEST SUMMARY

The flight test phase of the multipath/ranging/digital data L-band experimental program is described. Special instrumentation, installation design, and initial terminal checkout procedures are discussed. Flight testing began in April 1971 using the satellite L-L NBFT mode but was reconfigured for the CXL mode following failure of the satellite L-band receiver. The link configuration changes and hardware modifications required are described. The remaining 27 flights were conducted between August 1971 and May 1972 using the modified link and the CXL satellite mode. The flight test organization, flight test geometries, detailed test plans, NASA support requirements, and typical operations schedules for the various tests are given. A summary tabulation of the data flights and a discussion of the in-flight system calibration procedures is included. (Author)
