TRAFFIC SAFETY ON ROADS WITH WHEEL RUTS. COMPUTER SIMULATION OF VEHICLE MOVEMENTS

TRAFIKSAEKERHET PAA SPAARIGA VAEGAR. SIMULERING I DATOR AV FORDONSROERELSER

The purpose of the project was to investigate the effects of rut depth on traffic safety under low friction conditions. Aquaplaning problems were not treated. A computerized model of vehicle dynamics was used to simulate vehicle movements on roads with ruts. The investigation shows that rut depth can have influence on traffic safety also when roads are covered with ice or snow. However the results are not a sufficient basis to decide the limits for rut depth with regard to traffic safety. The results are somewhat uncertain, partly because comparatively few simulations have been made and partly because driver reactions have not been taken into account. Therefore, the possibilities to use the VTI driving simulator ought to be investigated. (Author/TRRL)
