M25 FEATURE: NINE-MACHINE CONCRETE PAVING TRAIN

The use of the sgme concrete paving train on the Chertsey-Wisley section of the M25 motorway is described. Because of the anticipated heavy traffic, the design has been upgraded to 300 mm of reinforced pavement quality concrete, on a 225 mm lean-concrete sub-base. Paving was carried out in two layers and two passes of 7.2 M width. The train consists of a 4.5 cu M spreader for the bottom layer, a compactor, dowel bar inserter, compactors engineering tie bar inserter, a spreader for the top layer, an articulated compactor and initial finisher of the top layer, a transverse joint cutter to cut and insert a plastic biformer in grooves to form joints, a diagonal finisher and a brushing and curing machine providing a brushed finish and aluminised compound spray. Dowel bars were mechanically inserted at the construction joints into the bottom layer of concrete, covered by the top layer and then vibrated. They were then exposed and alignment checks showed that the early concrete mixes were not stable enough to retain them in position. However a change in aggregate produced satisfactory results. The programmed rate of 340 linear M per day was exceeded on many occasions with a maximum of 700 linear M in one day. (TRRL)
