ULSTER'S ELEGANT BRIDGE OVER THE ERNE
Appearance was an important factor in the design and construction of the bridge at Enniskillen in the County of Fermanagh where the lakes are an important tourist attraction. A nearby nineteenth century twin arch masonary bridge acts with the new bridge to form a one-way traffic system alongside a fifteenth century building. It was decided that a three-span reinforced concrete, splay-legged structure with the 48 M long centre span stretching between river banks was the most suitable. The frame is continuous throughout and is flexible enough to accept the design loading without the need for hinges. Several different finishes are used to blend with the surroundings; the front-elevations of the four outer legs were formed in pre-cast smooth-finished CRC units which were used as permanent formwork. Parapet railings were specially designed and posts were tapered to be less obtrusive. Some difficulties were encountered in the forming of the concrete thrust blocks on the hard, fissured rock some 5 M to 6 M below water level. (TRRL)
