ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR TERZAGHI'S WEDGE THEORY FOR EARTH PRESSURE, AND STABILITY OF CUTS IN COHESIVE AND FRICTIONAL SOILS

The paper presents the formulation and development of a rigorous analytical solution, based on Terzaghi's general wedge theory for earth pressure on the supporting system of cuts, in the general case of a cohesive and frictional soil thereby filling an important gap existing in theoretical soil mechanics. The results of the analysis have been presented in the form of plots between the active earth pressure factor and a non-dimensional cut parameter. Based on the above, a rigorous expression has been arrived at for the factor of safety against heave at the bottom of cuts in cohesive and frictional soils. (TRRL)
