A STUDY ON POTENTIAL-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP OF CLAYS

Clay particles carrying negative charges on their surfaces interact with the surrounding pore fluid leading to the development of diffuse double layer. The paper reports the results obtained on the effect of varying pore fluid properties (namely salt concentration, valency of cation, dielectric constant and temperature) and clay minerals (bentonite, illite and kaolinite) on the electric potential at the surface and at a distance from the clay platelet based on Gouy-Chapman theory. Simple graphical solutions are given to find the electric potential at the surface and its variation with distance. A solution for distribution of cations and anions in the double layer is also given. (TRRL)
