THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES 88 TRACTORS

The International Series 88, a new concept in four-wheel drive agricultural tractors, positions the operator on the rear half of these articulated tractors for good visibility and feel for rear-mounted implements, and still provides a good view of the front wheels for accurate guidance in row crops (the largest U.S. market for agricultural tractors). In year round use, extensive field evaluation proved that the Series 88 gave excellent performance. Positioning the Control Center to the rear greatly enhanced operator visibility of following implements, and positioning the operator on the section to which the implement was attached allowed improved sensing of implement performance. The Series 88 possesses greater stability than two-wheel drive tractors, improving performance with wide row crop planters and cultivators. Many high-volume components in production for two-wheel drive tractors were incorporated into the new design (the 400 Series engines, and the transmission, final drive, rear axle and cab from the Series 86 tractors). For testing, the tractor was fitted with histogram recorders to collect data on a variety of parameters while operating in the field (e.g. engine speed, engine exhaust gas temperature, articulation angle). Histogram data were used to establish test procedures and goals for some of the hydraulic components used, as well as to evaluate loading imposed by the steering system, and to validate theoretical calculations and assumptions of tractor performance.
