CARMAKERS INVEST IN LOST FOAM CASTING

A new casting method is described which offers design flexibility and considerable economies for the automobile industry. Known as lost foam casting, the technique uses patterns made from expanded polystyrene foam. The foam is buried in fine sand without binders, and the sand is vibrated so that it makes its way into the internal cavities of the pattern. When the molten metal is poured into the mold, the foam pattern is burned off. Extremely complex castings can be made with a highly accurate finish.
