PRELIMINARY QCGAT (QUIET CLEAN GENERAL AVIATION TURBOFAN) PROGRAM TEST RESULTS

A program was conducted to demonstrate that large commercial engine technology can be applied to general aviation engines to reduce noise, emissions, and fuel consumption, and to develop new technology as required. Following initial studies, contracts were awarded to two manufacturers to design, fabricate, test, and deliver a QCGAT (Quiet Clean General Aviation Turbofan) experimental engine and test nacelle. The QCGAT engines have now entered the test phase. The overall engine program, design, and QCGAT engine technology are described. Preliminary engine test results are presented and compared to design requirements. Initial results indicate that most technical goals will be met or exceeded.
