COST-BENEFIT STUDY OF RAJKOT BYPASS ON N.H. NO 8B
Construction of bypasses around congested cities/towns is one of the important activities involved in highway development. A bypass provides for the through traffic a more convenient, quick and safe route free of congestion by local traffic, and thus may lead to savings in vehicle operating costs. At the same time, it involves huge initial investment for construction. In a developing country as India where funds for bypass construction are hard to find, it will be advantageous to carry out studies for economic viability. In this context, a cost-benefit study of the Rajkot bypass on National Highway 8B was carried out by the Traffic Engineering Cell in Gujarat State. This paper describes the step by step procedure adopted in collecting information on the different aspects and the analysis for examining the economic viability of the bypass. The data used relate to both pre-bypass and post-bypass periods. The paper discusses at length certain issues with regard to quantification of accident costs and time costs. (TRRL)
