A STUDY OF AUTOMOBILE OCCUPANT BEHAVIORS IN CAR-TO-CAR COLLISION USING SCALE MODELS - EFFECT OF SAFETY-BELTS ON SUBCOMPACT CAR'S OCCUPANT IN HEAD-ON COLLISION

In previous tests, using scale-model cars, measurements of car behaviour were obtained in the case of barrier impacts, car-to-car head-on impacts, and side impacts with a stationary car. In this paper, head injury criteria (HIC), lap and shoulder belt loads, and hip displacements of a belted occupant are examined, when in head-on collision at equal speeds, using scale model belts and occupants in model cars. The tests showed that an occupant's head rotated around the torso and that the torso rotated around the lower half of the body on impact. Model cars were designed to incorporate impact characteristics of actual subcompact and compact cars. The tests were intended to clarify the effects of belt characteristics, impact characteristics of subcompact and compact cars, and also impact speeds, on the behaviour of a subcompact car's occupants.
