EFFECTS OF WEB OPENINGS ON THE COLLAPSE BEHAVIOUR OF STEEL BOX GIRDER MODELS

Ultimate strength tests on small scale steel box girder models are reported. The models were subjected either to pure bending or combined bending and shear loading. The effects of web openings on the load carrying capacity of girders, under pure bending load, are shown to be small. The test results show that the ultimate capacity of the girders dropped substantially with the increase in the size of web openings when the girders are subjected to combined bending and shear.
