A DUAL SERVO- CONTROLLED TEST RIG

A facility to test small scale thin model steel plates in combined shear and axial compression has been described and details are given for the fabrication of test specimens which satisfactorily model the performance of full size plate elements. Some preliminary experimental results for plates with a fixed geometry are given. Definitions of collapse interaction relationships are considered which highlight the need to clarify the meaning of these relationships. The early results show that many of the conventional definitions of interaction need not be considered in design if use is made of the first maxima which are attained in either of the axial force or shear loadings. Useful design results will require further testing to establish the sensitivity of the interaction relationships to various plate geometries and material properties. (Author/TRRL)
