RELIABILITY OF FILLET WELD DESIGN

A reliability analysis of the strength of fillet welded connections designed according to as 1250-1981 and as 1250-1972 is presented. Various components of the variability associated with the strength of fillet welded connections are distinguished and estimates for these components are given based on available experimental data. The variations due to the design criteria and the stress analysis, as well as the variations due to the variability in weld metal strength, weld size, and fabrication effects including the welding process are examined. For the combination of dead and live loads, the safety index for the strength of fillet welded connections designed according to current codes is found to vary between 4 and 5. The study shows that most of the uncertainty in the estimation of the design strength of fillet welded connections is in the analysis process. A framework now exists enabling further data to be incorporated into the analysis and the effect on connection reliability of any change in design method can be evaluated. (TRRL)
