COUPLING OF DIRECTIONAL AND ROLL MOTIONS OF SURFACE SHIPS
Investigation results are presented of the dynamical considerations of ship movement interactions. The methods of roll and yaw control are reviewed. An analog model used in the investigation has been modified to include an active fin stabiliser and results are presented to show the effects of the cross coupling. This work shows the potential benefits to be achieved by evolving a single optimal controller for such a multi-loop interacting system. Possible strategies that may be used in such a controller are discussed.
