RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTS OF BRAKING AND ACCELERATION OF RAILWAY TRAINS ON BRIDGES
RECHERCHES SUR L'INFLUENCE DU FREINAGE ET DU DEMARRAGE DES CONVOIS FERROVIAIRES SUR LES PONTS
This article sums up a research project carried out by the UIC Office for Research and Experiments (ORE) on the effects of braking and acceleration of railway trains on bridges. The aim of this study was to assess the forces caused by braking and acceleration on bridges, and how these are spread over the rails, the structure, its supports and the terrain. After a standard method of measurement and data analysis had been established and specific units of measurement agreed, open line tests were carried out. The author goes on to describe the tests carried out on different types of bridge, draws conclusions from the most significant findings of this research, and summarises the studies carried out. He then describes a method of calculation obtained as a result of this research, and finishes with some additional thoughts.
