CHARACTERIZATION OF HEAVY-DUTY DIESEL GASEOUS AND PARTICULATE EMISSIONS, AND EFFECTS OF FUEL COMPOSITION
Gaseous and particulate emissions from two midrange engines commonly used in urban and suburban environments were characterized using five different fuels, in order to advance the technology of measuring as yet unregulated constituents. The engines used were a Caterpillar 3208 four-stroke and a Detroit Diesel 6V-71 two-stroke, neither having a recirculation system. The fuels were the 2D emissions test fuel and four others representative of those available nationwide. Characterization included mass rates of major exhaust products as well as analysis of particulate matter for sulfate, trace elements, major elements, total solubles, and other properties. Analysis of rate and composition data was made to determine fuel and engine effects on particulate. Two large particulate samples were also collected for later analysis on groups of organics. Among the insurmountable obstacles to making predictive linear models for particulate rate and composition based on fuel properties were insufficient number of data points, and strong pairwise correlations and multicollinearity among the independent fuel property variables.
