APPLYING AN AUXILIARY DRIVE SYSTEM TO EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT FOR INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY
A unique auxiliary drive system has been applied to the front wheels of John Deere motor graders to increase tractive effort and directional stability. The system can be applied to several types of mobile industrial equipment. It includes three functionally combined systems to accomplish the front-wheel drive capability: hydraulic drive system to provide power to the front wheels, overload protection, and differential lock capability; electronic control system to maintain continuous, accurate speed of the front wheel motors; and front wheel engagement system to provide smooth and correct engagement of the front wheels in relation to the main transmission engagement. Electronics helped accomplish goals concerning high performance and minimum design change to an existing machine.
