AUSTRALIA'S BUSWAY BEING BUILT WILL BE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN WORLD

Adelaide, South Australia, will be the site of the world's first operating bus guideway, using modified buses that can be used conventionally on city streets and then diverted to the guideway where they are controlled by sensing wheels riding on the guide rails. The 12 kilometer guideway will allow the buses to travel between Adelaide and its suburbs at speeds up to 100 kilometers an hour. The trip will take 20 minutes, half the present time. Compared with a light-rail system, the busway will be both more versatile (fewer transfers) and cheaper ($86 million US versus $140 million US). Construction began in 1982, and the busway is scheduled to open in 1986.
