LATERITES IN BRAZIL
Additional studies on the use of laterite in place of crushed stone for base course for asphalt paved roads have been carried out in Brazil. Preliminary results, based on experience with laterite-based roads built over 20 years ago, indicate that extended weathering and consolidation under traffic is not necessary before the surface is paved. The financial savings possible through use of laterites is indicated in one estimate that the use of laterites on a 500 kilometer segment of the Puerto Velho-Cuiaba road, now under construction ("World Highways", June 1983) would have saved US $16 million.
