LATERITE BASES FOR LOW-VOLUME ROADS MAY IMPROVE SERVICE LIFE, SAVE MONEY
Asphalt roads built in Kenya a decade ago, using lateritic materials as a base course in place of the more expensive specified gravel or crushed rock, have performed very satisfactorily, according to a recent report by Britain's Overseas Development Administration. Evidence indicates that the success lies in leaving the base course unsurfaced for one year. During this period it is subject to wetting, drying, and the kneading action of traffic causing an increase in density. "By using readily available naturally occurring laterites as base materials, substantial savings can be made by varying from 20 percent to 60 percent of the cost of upgrading the road to bituminous standards," the report says.
