ATLANTA REBUILDS FREEWAY SYSTEM WHILE MAINTAINING TRAFFIC FLOW
The rebuilding of Atlanta's 194-kilometer freeway system transforming a 4-lane facility to a 8-lane, and in some cases, 10-lane facility, has reduced morning and afternoon peak hour travel times and increased the average operational speeds by 16 kilometers per hour. The system was rebuilt under traffic with two lanes of traffic operating in each direction at all times. This was accomplished by making maximum use of adjacent surface streets, and by careful operational scheduling. Operating speeds were not reduced during construction, except in short intervals for specific operations which were announced ahead of time to minimize inconvenience to the public. The traffic accident figure did not increase while work was in progress.
