RESEARCH INTO THE OPERATIONAL STRENGTH OF ORTHOTROPIC STEEL PLATE DECKING WITH TRAPEZOID RIBS IN RAILWAY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZUR BETRIEBSFESTIGKEIT VON STAHLLEICHTFAHRBAHNEN MIT TRAPEZHOHLSTEIFEN IM EISENBAHNBRUECKENBAU
Experimental results are presented on the fatigue strength of an orthotropic steel plate deck with trapezoidal closed longitudinal ribs intended for use in railway bridges. A preceding analytical study provided the information to define the structural details of particular concern and the appropriate testing conditions. The intersection of plate deck and transverse floor beam was identified as the most specific detail to be investigated in full scale test pieces. An improved form of the cut outs in the web of the floor beam was developed and the corresponding weld class was specified along with a structural model on which the calculation may be based. The weld class applicable to splices of the closed ribs by means of butt welds on backing plates was found to depend on the arrangement of the tack welds. In evaluating the test results it was necessary to critically account for the differing fatigue behaviour of simple small specimens and of full scale welded test pieces in terms of the mean stress effect and the range of scatter as depending on residual stresses.
