Habits, attitudes, and expectations of regular users of partial driving automation systems
This survey examined attitudes and behavior of drivers utilizing partial driving automation systems (also known as Level 2 systems). The systems utilized by respondents included General Motors Super Cruise, Nissan/Infiniti ProPILOT Assist, and Tesla Autopilot. The survey looked at likelihood of engaging in non-driving-related activities while using the systems as compared to driving without assistance. In addition, attitudes around the safety of engaging in secondary activities while using the systems were explored. Secondary tasks engaged in while using partial automation included eating, using smartphone apps, reading, texting, watching videos, and grooming activities. Based on survey responses, 53% of the Super Cruise users; 42% of the Autopilot users; and 12% of the ProPILOT Assist users felt comfortable letting the systems drive automatically without having to watch the road.
