CAR PARKING - FROM THE GROUND UP
Some multi-storey car parks which either do not fully meet the requirements for parking or else have high maintenance costs and a short life, are still being built. Some of the basic problems are covered in this paper and some points are discussed where no single or satisfactory solution can be found. Many improvements at design state carry no, or little, increase in capital cost but are effective in reducing maintenance or increasing income. The author considers capacity, internal flow, entry and exit, site dimensions, materials for construction and cost of construction, durability, the possibility of blast damage, water proofing, ventilation, management of shopping trolleys, ticket kiosks and UK building regulations.
