PARKING PROGRESS AT REDDITCH-CAR PARK 3

Details are given of some of the design and construction aspects of car park 3 in Redditch (designated a New Town in 1964). The aim of the car park is to serve the kingfisher shopping centre together with 4 other car parks. Within the car park there are 12 parking levels arranged on the normal staggered level, half floor pattern with interconnecting ramps. Circulation upwards is via a long route taking cars past the majority of lower spaces. The downward circulation is via a fast route of adjacent ramps at the exit end of the car park. The reinforced concrete structure has waffle floors and rectangular columns to a basic 9.9M x 9.8M grid pattern. The floors have been designed as balanced cantilevers with expansion joints where the car park articulates. This flooring system not only looks attractive but reduces the weight of the structure and can conveniently house the internal lighting units. Considerable importance is attached to the provision of adequate landscaping and a substantial band of planting has been provided around the car park and comprises of a mixture of forest and decorative trees, shrubs and ground cover. A series of photographs accompany the article showing such features as access, interior and landscaping. (TRRL)
