TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES; STORAGE, TRANSPORT, WORKING UP AND COMPACTION OF HOT BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

ASFALTTECHNOLOGISCHE ASPECTEN; OPSLAG, TRANSPORT, VERWERKEN EN VERDICHTEN VAN WARM ASFALT

Quality characteristics of hot bituminous mixtures, as affected by the working up of these mixtures, are discussed. The extra hardening of bitumen, the segregation of the mixture and the crushing of aggregates by compaction, and measures to prevent these phenomena, are discussed. The advantage of immediate paving on cement stabilized roadbases to avoid reflective cracking, over paving after 28 days, is described. Aspects influencing the compaction of bituminous mixtures (the composition of the mixture; compaction by the paver; the bearing capacity of the roadbase; cooling of the mixture; the choice of roller and the rolling method) are extensively reviewed. Attention is paid to shear of bituminous layers caused by rolling. (TRRL)
