DEVICE FOR MEASURING THE SERVICEABILITY OF ROAD

TIEN PALVELUTASOMITTARI

A device for measuring the serviceability of road, which is based on mechanical measurement of cross-profile by measuring wheels, was developed in Finland jointly by the Road and Traffic Laboratory and the Machinery Laboratory of the Technical Research Centre. The measuring of cross-profile is done by using an index plane given by 11 measuring wheels at intervals of 20 cm and bearing wheels. The lateral gradient of road is measured by a gyroscope fitted on the hauling vehicle. Damage in the surface of the road is registered manually using a claviary which records 4 continuous and 2 point variables. The measurements carried out so far have given the following types of damage: longitudinal cracks, net cracks, patching, wearing through the pavement, transverse cracks and pot holes. Output takes place both immediately and through data processing. (TRRL)
