RESEARCH OF ENERGY SAVING IN PAVING WORKS

TIENPAALLYSTYSTEOLLISUUDEN ENERGIANSAASTOTUTKIMUS

The purpose of the research was to study the need of energy in the production of road pavements which contain mineral oil-based binders, and to find out whether it is possible to save energy as regards the production of pavement mixtures at asphalt plants, the production and storage of pavement aggregate and use of the heating method. The production of pavement aggregate should take place under conditions as dry as possible and the storage heaps should be kept dry. Most of the energy spent in the production of asphalt mixtures is taken by the drying and heating of aggregate. The average consumption of mixture for pavements constructed by the heating method has reduced from 75 kg/sq M in 1980 to 65 kg/sq M in 1982. As the share of heating energy is about one fifth of the total energy required by the production of pavement, any saving in heating energy is of importance. To raise the efficiency of the heating method equipment, an apparatus has been developed in Sweden for recovering the hot air coming from under the edges of the heater. (TRRL)
