PAVEMENT DAMAGE AND CAUSES THEREOF
PAALLYSTEIDEN VAURIOT JA NIIDEN SYYT
The rutting of pavements continues to be the most important type of pavement damage. The degree of use of studded tyres in Finland is the highest in the world: for passenger cars over 90 per cent, and for heavy vehicles in southern and northern Finland 30 and 80 per cent respectively. The higher number of heavy vehicles and the raising of their maximum axle loads some ten years ago have increased the plastic deformation of pavements. On some main roads it has been estimated to account for 5 to 20 per cent of the total rut formation. The raising of the maximum grain size of asphalt to achieve a reduction in the wear due to studded tyres has brought about increased segregation of pavements. As segregation cuts down the lifetime of pavement, it has sometimes been questioned whether the reduction of the wear due to studded tyres should be effected in this way. Transverse cracks are the result of contraction after periods of frost. By using sufficiently soft binder their development can be avoided, but since that might have a harmful effect on the other wear-resistance properties of pavement, they have generally been taken care of by patching.
