THE COMPLETE SHIPBOARD SATELLITE TERMINAL

This paper discusses the pre-design studies of a commercial satellite communications system relating to present and future generation satellites, terminal specifications and features, safety and distress capability, position fixing and worldwide service problems. Trade-off studies leading to maximum reliability consistent with cost and operation are covered in some detail. These studies have resulted in the design and prototyping of a unique shipboard terminal to be manufactured in 1974 for use with the MARISAT and succeeding satellites. The specifications, features, operation, and installation problems of this terminal are fully discussed.
