AN ATS-F MARITIME SATELLITE EXPERIMENT

Satellite communications is a subject of interest to the Coast Guard, for its potential utility in improving internal communications and maritime safety. In this paper, the authors will briefly review past Coast Guard experiments with DOD and NASA satellites as well as the National and International role played by the Coast Guard in this area. The bulk of the paper will be devoted to a description of the CG involvement in a planned joint experiment utilizing the NASA Applications Technology Satellite - F (ATS-F), now scheduled for launch in May 1974. Participants include the Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), both working with the DOT Transportation Systems Center (TSC), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Maritime Administration (MARAD), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Government of Canada, all of whom will perform various evaluations of aeronautical and/or maritime L-Band satellite communications. CG test objectives are outlined. A detailed description of the ship satellite terminal will be included. Finally, the paper will forecast the possible impact of the experiment on the design and operation of a maritime satellite system, both from the shipboard and total system viewpoint.
