THE POLAR-CLASS ICEBREAKER-SUPER SHIP OF THE COAST GUARD

The polar class icebreakers presently under construction at Lockhead Shipbuilding and Construction Co. in Seattle for the Coast Guard will fit some of the newest synthesized military communications equipment with the latest in antenna design to provide continous world wide communications. The satellite navigation system will provide precise navigational data and the LO-Cate (Loran/ Omega Course And Track Equipment) will provide a precision weather balloon tracking system with a TACAN system for helicopter tracking. The lastest oceanographic research equipment in fully equipped oceanographic and meteorological laboratories make the ship a scientist's dream. Additionally the ships are designed to be completely self-sustaining with trained technical personnel and spare parts to repair all except the most catastrophic of failures.
