OPERATIONAL EVALUATION OF AN AUTOMATED CONNING SYSTEM
An Automated Conning System, developed under U.S. Maritime Administration sponsorship, has been installed and operationally evaluated aboard the American Export Lines container vessel "EXPORT FREEDOM." The objectives of this development program are to improve the operational capability, safety, reliability, and manning characteristics of U.S. Merchant ships. The implementations chosen include a completely modularized bridge, integrating both advanced equipments and subsystems (satellite navigation, doppler sonar, collision advoidance, computerized Decca, computer-driver trackplotter) with conventional bridge controls and instruments (propulsion, communications, safety) into standardized consoles. The results of the results of the first year shipboard operational test and evaluation program are discussed with particular emphasis on technical performance and economic benefits under conditions of usage by multiple crews of varying motivation and skill level.
