JAPAN: EAST-WEST TIES GAIN MOMENTUM
Much has already been said about the phenomenal rate of development of new soft ground tunneling techniques in Japan. Feelings amongst tunnellers in the more traditional tunneling nations of Europe and North America have in the past run high, with the new technology from Japan often being seen as a threat rather than a benefit in their sphere of the industry. Attitudes, however, appear to be changing and the evidence of the last two or three years points to a future of cooperation and mutual gain. The article discusses Japanese tunneling machine and shield manufacturers and applications, contacts with European manufacturers, exports of tunneling machinery and technology.
