DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING

The need for improved methods of establishing communications between ships and Coast stations has generated a number of ideas and concepts to provide such service. In 1967, the World Administrative Radio Conference for Maritime Matters of the International Telecommunication Union adopted "to fulfil immediate requirements" a Sequential Single Frequency Code (SSFC) system. It has not been generally adopted by the maritime ship operators during the following years. However, the need for a more general and capable system remained. In 1972 the Maritime Administration Office of Commercial Development initiated a project to develop and test a digital selective calling system which had the potential to meet all the foreseen requirements for such devices. The specifications for the system relied heavily upon the work done by the U.S. Working Group of CCIR SG 8 and RTCM SC-64. Tests were performed at-sea during the summer of 1973 to obtain data for submission to the CCIR. Later in the year, additional testing was done on the HF simulator at ITS in Boulder. System description and test data is presented. A conclusion is drawn that the system will meet the specification of its design and the requirements of the world maritime community for selective calling.
