INTRINSIC SAFETY--A STATUS REVIEW

The use of intrinsic safety in electrical circuit design techniques for hazard reduction started about 1912 in English coal mines. The advancement of this design art has been influenced by various regulatory bodies both in the USA and abroad. The lack of a thorough understanding of hazardous atmospheres has hindered the development of this design technique. Details of the interaction between regulation and scientific knowledge are presented.
