MINERALOGY AND SWELLING OF EXPANSIVE CLAY SOILS
Partially saturated clayey soil samples were taken from different locations and depths at Nasr City-an arid recently developed area in the suburbs of Cairo. They were investigated for their mineralogical and engineering properties; then the mineralogical composition (clay content, clay mineral type and exchangeable ion) of these clayey soils were correlated with their engineering properties. The study emphasized the controlling effect of mineralogical composition on swelling behaviour of expansive clayey soils, showed that the free swelling and activity of clay minerals may be used as indirect methods in the determination of mineralogical composition of clay, and recommended the use of the free swelling test for estimating the expansivity of clayey soils.
