PATROL CAR STOPS SPEEDING AND SHORTENS DRIVER REACTION TIMES
POLIISIAUTO PUDOTTAA NOPEUDET JA LYHENTAEAE REAKTIOAJAT
An experiment was conducted to study the influence of the presence of a police patrol car on driver behaviour. Changes in driver speed and lateral position were measured at a junction from which emerged a cyclist. A police car was stationed 400M ahead of the site of the experiment. Measurements showed that the presence of the police car caused the driver to decrease his speed by 8 to 9 km/h, e.g. His mean speed fell just below the 70 km/h speed limit. The driver reaction was quicker by 1 to 2.5s, and the lateral movement of the car caused by the appearance of the cyclist (40 cm maximum) took place earlier. (TRRL)
