POROUS ASPHALTIC CONCRETE; REPORT OF DUTCH EXPERIENCE
ZEER OPEN ASFALT; VERSLAG VAN NEDERLANDSE ERVARINGEN
In order to maximize skidding resistance of wet roads, the application of a porous asphaltic wearing course is discussed. Requirements of the materials (aggregate, sand, filler and bitumen) for porous asphaltic concrete is given. Resistance against permanent deformation, strength and durability of the mixture were tested. Requirements of production, construction and compaction of porous asphaltic concrete for 40 mm and 20 mm layers is given. Skidding resistance, evenness, traffic noise, splash and spray and light reflection in relation to porous asphaltic concrete wearing courses are determined. It is stated that more care is needed in winter maintenance of porous wearing courses than of dense wearing courses. The cost of porous asphaltic concrete is outlined, and found to be only slightly higher in comparison with that of dense asphaltic concrete. (TRRL)
