ACCIDENT RATE OF MOTORCYCLISTS RELATED TO EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

ONGEVALSBETROKKENHEID VAN MOTORRIJDERS IN RELATIE TOT ERVARING EN RIJOPLEIDING

Training of motor-cyclists does not seem to be systematically structured. There is no analysis of what may or should be expected from them in any given situation. Parallel to the present practising permit - allowing the motor-cyclist to prepare for the test independently, without any knowledge of traffic and bike - a learning permit will be issued. The new permits will be issued on the condition that the person in question takes driving-lessons and they will be valid throughout the Netherlands. The traditional practising permits will only be issued after the theory test has been passed and a medical certificate has been obtained. Furthermore the exams for driving instructors will be revised. Based on interviews carried out during the Rai motorcycle show 1981 the authors conclude among other statements that the greatest chance of being involved in an accident is in the first year of practice, and that those who only took a few driving lessons were less involved in accidents than motorcyclists who had been taking many lessons.
